Hunger to Learn
The distance between not knowing and knowing, or between not skilled and skilled, is the space of learning.
So, if you sense frustration while learning or practicing, it’s a good sign! That discomfort often signals growth it means you’re stretching, moving beyond the familiar- Dr. Becky Kennedy -Founder of Good Inside.
But how many are willing to go through the frustration to learn!
According to the 2024 Employee Training Statistics Report by Gitnux, only about 12% of employees report applying new skills learned in training to their jobs. That’s a sobering number. It raises a deeper question, If so many attend training programs, why do so few translate that into impact?
In my view, the real key to impactful learning after and during a training, lies in “HOW” and “WHY” we nominate people in the first place. When the nomination process and the measurement of training effectiveness are aligned with a larger purpose for the individual, the results can be transformative.
Early in my career, I was fortunate that Wipro saw potential and gave me access to hands-on programs like world-class manufacturing. At Oracle, the learning deepened across leadership, consulting, and product training. What made it stick? Purpose. And alignment between my curiosity and the company’s belief in me.
Even post-corporate, my hunger to learn never stopped, from coaching and NLP to AI, startups, and nonprofits to Music.. In each case, I was pursuing purpose-driven learning because I saw potential if I learn and had the hunger to grow.
If you choose people with genuine potential those with the right capabilities and, more importantly, a real hunger to learn you’ve already won half the battle. Miss out on either, the outcome rarely lives up to expectations.
